The mission of the Luzerne County Diversity Commission is to bring together a cross section of diverse community leaders to develop a consensus on innovative ways to make our region more inclusive and make our community more aware of the opportunities to benefit from diversity.

Our History

In June 2006, the Luzerne County (PA) Commissioners, in response to significant needs in the region, authorized the formation of a diversity task force to make recommendations to the commissioners regarding action plans for addressing diversity issues in Luzerne County.

A main task force of 35 members was appointed by the Commissioners, and the Diversity Institute at Misericordia University was appointed to provide ongoing staff support.

Subsequently, four sub-committees were formed, in order to divide the work and more efficiently address the variety of diversity concerns in our county. The groups are

      1. Community Safety
      2. Community Spirit/Immigration
      3. Economic Development
      4. Education

After the first year, it became clear that the work of the task force needed to be a long term project. In March of 2008, with the approval of the Luzerne County Commissioners, the ad hoc Diversity Task Force officially became a permanent advisory board to the Commissioners, the  Luzerne County Diversity Commission.
